Blue Fred My 1950 Buick

MY 56R is Cascade blue with an Olympic blue top. The car is in original garb including the paint and upholstery. I can see that it has had very few changes made to it. There are things like a reproduction tissue dispenser, and a replaced carpet, but otherwise it looks original. The original tyres came along with the car as well. They had been replaced by the last owner who kept the tyres with the car because they were so good looking, and by keeping the tyers the car was complete and original. At the time the car had traveled 16,000 Miles.

I am owner number six.  I have spoken to all of the owners with the exception of the original owner who had died. One fellow had the car for 28 years and he told me he did not like to drive it too much because it was so pretty.

Photo to the right is Ron S', owner number four.

Amazingly, it took five months to get the car from Canada to Perth. Frustrating stuff including car being unloaded in Melbourne instead of Fremantle and it sitting in a warehouse in Melbourne for almost a month. Anyhow, I am told that is all part of the experience of importing a car.

Family friend, Betty Chandler posed for a dealer promotional photograph on the bonnet of the first Holden sold in the Murwillumbah district of NSW. Betty is still modelling!

I found the owners by contacting a genealogist at a local library in Oskaloosa Iowa.  The volunteer genealogist, Linda, was a little reluctant at fist but I asked her to think of  the car was a person. She did enjoy the project and sent me a very detailed document of all her findings. http://www.opl.oskaloosa.org/

The library charged $7.50US per hour for Linda's time. I forget the total number of hours but it was well worth it to me as I find the providence of an object very important.

Twentieth Birthday. Jimmy and I stopped the car, took this photo, and sang 'Happy Birthday'

My favourite thing about this car is the width of the doors. I drove my first Buick on a daily basis for six years. During this time I became very used to the proportions of the four door. I have been driving this car since January 2005, and I am still not used to the size of the doors. They are great big long things!

Cuban Cousin

I saw this car in Cuba in 2004. From afar this car looks like a complete 1950 Buick. However on close inspection it is only part Buick.

So much of the car had been replaced with "Stuff" from a wild combination of cars including Lada. The engine was diesel and the dash looked like it had come from a farm vehicle. Despite all of this it was loaded up with locals and headed off to some far flung part of the island in a cloud of thick black smoke!
